Article body: "When the El Reno High School Class of '58 gathers next weekend to recall their school days, two maps of El Reno, circa 1958, should help stir stories of 'Do you remember when ... ?' Nineteen-fifty-eight graduate and local historian Carolyn Marquardt Barker compiled and drew the two maps for the reunion. On the maps, she has filled in all the names and locations off businesses which were downtown and on Sunset Drive the year her class graduated. The downtown map measures 30 x 50 inches. The south end of the map begins at the high school and goes north through Choctaw, Bickford and Rock Island streets to the old courthouse and post office. It encompasses four blocks east and west and six blocks north and south. 'Only a few businesses are still in the same location with the same names,' said Barker. These are The El Reno Daily Tribune, Evans Cleaners, and Citizens National Bank. The Centre Theater is in the same place, but is now known as the Cinema. Some of the names and faces that have changed downtown include the bowling alley which was once located at 108 S. Choctaw. Th old City Hall and fire department were on West Russell (Sunset Drive) and the police station was around the corner on S. Choctaw. Because (then) U.S. 66 and U.S. 81 were busy roads which passed through downtown, there were many hotels, filling stations and cafes located downtown in 1958. 'The reason I did a map of Sunset Drive was because it was such a part of our high school years,' said Barker. 'Country Club Road was not the same road it is today. We did not have all of those businesses and fast food places.' The Sunset map shows Sunset Drive-In and Jobe's Drive-In, built in 1957, where the students bought sodas and visited. She said there were a lot of used car lots in town back then. 'We did not buy new cars back then and not everyone had a car. We'd pile into someone's car and cruise around and around downtown,' Barker recalls. Barker also remembers Barnes Garage on Sunset. It had a large clock hanging on the outside of the building and teenagers would drive by to see if they were past their curfew. The coliseum (Jenks Simmons) was being built during Barker's high school years and she remembers when high school basketball games were played in the gym in the high school basement. Hensley's Cafe was then located on the curve on Sunset near the football stadium and was a popular spot for eating and visiting, she said. The last place shown on the Sunset map is the Squaw Drive-In Theater. 'They showed two different movies each weekend night,' she recalls." Article without published of which newspaper and date. Article title: "Reunion plans special assembly." Article body: "The EHS Classes of 1956, 1957 and 1958 Reunion may have an evet that is of interest to 'these not in that select group, reunion organizers say. An ''assembly'' on Aug. 8 is open to the public, said reunion co-chairman Dolores Oneth White. The event at the El Reno High School auditorium begins at 10:20 a.m. ''Why 10:20? That was the time we had our morning assemblies,' White said. On hand to serve as masters of ceremonies will be former student council presidents Kenneth Johnson ('56) of Las Vegas, John Shaw ('57) of Colorado and Jim Murphy ('58) of El Reno. About 20 former teachers and coaches will be recognized including Ray Porter of El Reno, longtime teacher; Bob Bodenhamer, a former football coach; Bob Beck, a math teacher; and Marie Moore, a former choir director, now of Ponca City. White said a highlight of the morning will be a re-enactment of the ''Sausage Grinder,' a favorite pep rally yell led by alumnus, John Henry Marsh. Marsh is the son of the late Walter P. Marsh, who served as principal in the '50s. Alumni and others will also be treated to a tour of the high school. White said a Saturday afternoon baseball card ex-change will take place during the latecomer registration at the Eagles Lodge. This was a specific request of alumni Chuck Janssen of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Pat McCabe of Florida, White said. Luncheon at the lodge begins at noon with afternoon events to include video show, hobby and memorabilia displays and socializing. The Reunion program for the weekend begins at 6 p.m. Aug 7 with registration at the Eagles Lodge." Article without who published and date. Article title: "El Reno Returning."
