Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "The "bigger the man, the easier to get along with" was an old adage Oklahoma City droppers - by were thinking Tuesday after pianist Van Cliburn checked the stage and lighting at Municipal Auditorium. "I was holding my breath," said Katy Damon, symphony director of public relations. "You never know just how an artist will react when he sees the size of the auditorium." "A lovly place," Cliburn exclaimed from the stage. "I think what you need though is an apron extending from the stage out into the audience. That way, a performer would be right among them." Prior to checking over the stage Cliburn stood in the outer lobby chatting with Jihn Watson, a piano teacher at Southwestern State College, Weatherford, and two of Watson's students, Stephen Truelove and Kent Watson. Cliburn tested the fingers and hands of the students for pliability for piano performance, and amused himself with a kind of educated palmistry. "A really great guy," said Truelove, after Cliburn had gone. "Easy to talk to and still easier to listen to." "I wish I were perceptive as he is," said young Watson. "He told me a lot about myself. (under photo: Van Cliburn...Piano and a lovely place.)"
