Pittsburg County

Musical history, people, ensembles, photographs, and source material from the Oklahoma Musicians Library.

The musical history of Pittsburg County.

Pittsburg County has a substantial historical research base, especially in McAlester. `(high)` The Pittsburg County Guardian was published in McAlester from 1905 to 1924 and its surviving issues provide an important primary source for early bands, parades, patriotic exercises, schools, and civic events. `(high)` McAlester High School yearbooks from 1954 and 1957 are digitized and provide direct visual and page-level leads for school-band research. `(high)` Savanna has documented modern marching and concert-band continuity, but the first pass did not verify its pre-2000 history. `(medium)` No complete countywide chronology of named bands, directors, and rosters was established in this first pass.
